While the sun sets and we gather around a table to share the grace and break bread, a soul just died of hunger. While we complain of eating only twice a day, a child somewhere in a war ridden zone is yet to feed his belly. He is too weak to dream let alone have the guts to critique his already condemned existence. There is greater evil out there than the daily demons we face. Our garbage would feed nations; our compassion would liberate more dreams. If only we dared to show love and see beyond our own needs. Let it be seen as a shame on humanity that while some lavish in affluence, many suffer in poverty. This is not about race or colour; it’s about meeting the needs of a fellow human. It is about the essence of love in a greed infested generation.
Day in day out, we are burdened by cruelty and pain. Check the press and feel the hatred we live in. Feel the shambles that has become of humanity. See the ignorance and self aggrandizement that surrounds us. While we kill ourselves and fight over another unjust cause, need I remind you, another child dies of hunger! Instead of trading food, we amass weapons and lead chariots. We seem to be well convinced that there is nothing wrong in dying for a true cause. In as much as such courage speaks volume, I am afraid the motive lacks depth. Just take a look at their faces, there is no other cause better worth pursuing than them. That is the ultimate motive and cause rolled together in one motion. They deserve a chance to dream also.
Let it not be that we didn’t offer out of the little we had. Let it not be that only the UN and Red Cross continually shouldered the burden. Rather, let it be that we cared. Let it be that we are the reason humanity finds her feet again. Let it be that we are the reason love stands a chance again. Let it be that we are the reason they get to stay off hunger and build the strength to dream again. Love surpasses the affection that exists between a man and a woman. Love is that seed of affection we sow into the life of a fellow human. Love is that show of respect we accord each others value and the courage we exhibit in dialogue. Why don’t we ensure that the love we show each other becomes the singular reason hunger never rears its ugly head again.
