I was very cheered by the news of Google acquiring Titan Aerospace last week or there about. I wasn’t surprised it was a tussle between Google and the new internet big buyers – Facebook. The value that Titan Aerospace brings to the internet market space is that relevant! With their solar powered drones that could stay afloat for close to 5 years, better internet services can be offered to developing countries and remote areas.
Evidently, the Titan Aerospace technology has a wide spectrum of application ranging from military use to infrastructural development purposes in areas where physical fiber optic cables might be impossible to implement or regions radio signals do not offer the best reception.
The deeper implication of this move is that Google continues to solidify their investment portfolio, stick to their creed of promoting innovation but more importantly their successful business ecosystem which is built on the availability of internet services could be better reinforced and sustained. Developing countries with this new move stand a better chance of having much cheaper and faster internet services compared to developed countries. And as a result, new business models are bound to emerge on the internet space in these regions while the old ones can equally gain more depth and a new lease of life. With e-commerce beginning to gain more grounds in Africa, this could be a gateway to more growth in this sector and part of the world.
